Travel Tips for France in Summer 2009 - D-Day in Normandie

A few tips hot off the presses to make your summer travel easy, fun, and cost-effective.

First things first – you are going to France this summer, right?

As you know, this is the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy – There will be crowds. There is a new museum, at Dead Man’s Corner, south of Ste. Mere-Eglise. This is the cross-roads between Omaha and Utah beaches – a 5-day hotspot during the D-Day invasion. The museum has very detailed displays and is very popular, especially with military history enthusiasts, veterans, and families of veterans. It also features D-Day memorabilia, including some original items. The biggest crowds are expected from June 1 -10.

When you go, think for a moment of the incredible courage it took to land on that beach and advance upward into machine gun fire.

The US and France are inextricably linked in our history and heritage. Without France, there would be no US. Without US, would there be a modern, Free France? It’s time to reaffirm our connections with each other and drop the xenophobic nonsense that occasionally spouts out on either side of the Atlantic.

Onward to France!
